In corporate settings worldwide, workplace modernization is happening at a rapid pace right now – perhaps more so than ever. IDC is describing this as a period of “PC hyper-growth” – between November 2021 and the present, computers are flooding into both commercial and consumer settings in record numbers, as people seek new devices that help them work flexibly both at home and in the office.
This is an exciting trend for tech-savvy professionals, but it’s also one that raises serious questions about sustainability. Bringing millions of new computers into the world requires a staggering amount of raw materials – and also, getting rid of millions of old ones means a lot of waste. These will be difficult challenges to navigate. IDC’s data suggests that 45% of all organizations worldwide consider sustainability to be a “very important” aspect of their technology decision-making between now and 2023.
